Rib-Based Anchors for Growing Rods in the Treatment of Early-Onset Scoliosis

x.doi.org/10.10 66//& 2016 E ent of Orthop York, NY. reprint reque opaedic Surg dway, Suite 8 mbia.edu The treatment of early-onset scoliosis (EOS) has evolved substantially over the years. Traditional growing-rod constructs rely on spine-based fixation for proximal and distal anchor sites. Hybrid growing-rod constructs pair rib-based proximal anchors with spinal or pelvic anchors distally. Both traditional and hybrid growing-rod constructs can control spinal deformity in young patients with early-onset scoliosis while preserving spinal and thoracic growth. Proximal rib fixation has many theoretical and practical advantages over spine-based proximal anchors. This article discusses the indications, technique, and outcomes of proximal rib fixation in hybrid growing-rod constructs for early-onset scoliosis. Oper Tech Orthop 26:241-246 C 2016 Elsevier Inc. Evaluating the extent of clinical uncertainty among treatment options for patients with early-onset scoliosis.
BACKGROUND Literature guiding the management of early-onset scoliosis consists primarily of studies with a low level of evidence. Evaluation of clinical equipoise (i.e., when there is no known superiority among treatment modalities) allows for prioritization of research efforts. The objective of this study was to evaluate areas of clinical uncertainty among pediatric spine surgeons regarding th...
متن کامل[Early onset scoliosis. What are the options?].
The prognosis of children with progressive early onset scoliosis has improved considerably due to recent advances in surgical and non-surgical techniques and the understanding of the importance of preserving the thoracic space. Improvements in existing techniques and development of new methods have considerably improved the management of this condition. Derotational casting can be considered in...
متن کاملDetermination of different types of scoliosis based on the apex of the spinal curve in adolescents
Background: Scoliosis is a Greek word for crocked and is an often referred as an shape side to side curves of spine. The spinal column twists and rotates creating an uneven shoulder and a rib hump, which can lead to breathing problems as the heart and lungs became compressed. Early detection, can increase the chances of successful treatment. The treatment of scoliosis varies depending on severi...
متن کاملGrowing rod analysis for the fusionless correction of Early Onset Scoliosis (EOS)
Introduction Managing spinal deformities in young children is challenging, particularly early onset scoliosis (EOS). Surgical intervention is often required if EOS has been unresponsive to conservative treatment particularly with rapidly progressive curves. An emerging treatment option for EOS is fusionless scoliosis surgery. Similar to bracing, this surgical option potentially harnesses growth...
متن کاملComparison of single and dual growing rods in the treatment of early onset scoliosis: a meta-analysis
BACKGROUND The growing rod technique was applied in the treatment of early onset scoliosis (EOS) with promising outcomes and many complications at the same time. We reviewed data from literatures to compare the results of single growing rods with dual growing rods to achieve a clear understanding of this technique. METHODS PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, CNKI, Wanfang Data, and CQVIP ...
